‘Tis the Season!
 Get Ready for Guests!!
Holidays give us opportunities to connect with distant friends and family – but not everyone has a dedicated guest room to accommodate out-of-town visitors. What can you do to create a sense of privacy and warmth when your “guest room” a convertible sofa bed or inflatable bed that’s tucked into the corner of your home office?
Anyone brave enough to spend more than a single night on a sofa bed, not matter how comfortable, deserves a little special attention!
If you are feeling particularly crafty you can purchase an inexpensive wood frame screen and recover it with a fabric that coordinates with the room. All you need is a staple gun, batting, fabric and TIME! Daly’s has a full library of unique fabric choices you can explore. If you are short on time, we offer professional resources to upholster that folding frame, recover an old chair or create new window treatments.
If you’d like to create a room-within-a-room, consider mounting cup hooks into the ceiling and hanging a ready-made indoor/outdoor shade. Some actually come in natural fibers and can look pretty good! I prefer the bamboo shades for this very reason. Ramp it up a notch by using a prefabricated roman shade and hang it in the same manner. Your only limitation is the standard sizes offered. Both of these options store easily when not in use and would most likely fit under a bed or in the back of the closet.
Let’s Address Comfort
You may want to add an extra layer to the standard sofa bed matress. Consider a feather bed or memory foam topper.
Some additional niceties to create a wonderful guest experience: feather and/or down pillows and comforters, 100% cotton high thread-count sheets, a lamp for reading, current magazines, locally-made chocolate for the pillow!
Even if your “guest room” is in the middle of the living rom, a few thoughtful embellishments will offer you and your guest some privacy and comfort and create an experience that’s merry and bright for all.

Volunteers staining the Seattle Ronald McDonald playhouse
About Ronald McDonald House:
The Seattle Ronald McDonald House provides housing to families who are going through a difficult time while caring for a seriously ill child who is receiving treatment at Seattle Children’s. In 2008, we provided 28,000 nights of housing to nearly 1,000 families.
These families come to us from throughout the Northwest, Alaska and beyond. Most arrive with their lives having suddenly been turned upside down, filled with fear, confusion and uncertainty. Most can’t afford housing,
The swing gets a fresh coat of Daly's Stain to keep the playground looking good!
And that’s where the House comes in, providing these families with a home filled with community, support – and hope.
Ta-Da! The new coat of Daly's Stain will keep the playhouse looking good for a long time.

C2 Paint's "Merlot", "Stout" and "Bluebeard" create an eye-catching exterior for this vision clinic!
Here’s a treat to be seen: a commercial building that is not BEIGE!!!
Kudos to Anne Viggiano Color Design & Consulting for this great color combination. By using a rich palette that is still muted, Anne has successfully taken the previous non-descript off-white exterior and added warmth, life and visual interest. All this from some buckets of paint.
As you can see, Anne knows that you can use color to direct the eye, add charater and emphasize architectural detail. Color is a tool that in the right hands can be utilized to feature positive aspects of a building, interior or exterior.
Paint is a inexpensive way to upgrade a building, there is no construction required. And if you are going to the effort of repainting anyways, why not use a skilled consultant to create the best outcome?
If you are interested in creating a fresh look with Anne, she is very tuned in to the C2 Paint palette and her masterful skills can help you go from blah to beautiful.

If your home was built before 1978, you may be concerned about that old paint. Does it contain lead? What are the best ways to handle old paint chips and dust if you do?
Shearer Painting has made an excellent video demonstrating what kind of training their professional painters received and how they took that knowledge into the field. If you are interested in seeing what happens, CLICK HERE.

13 Must-Use Tips for Hiring the Right Painter!
By Robin Daly of Daly’s Paint & Decorating
You’ve visited the paint store; tried, tested and sampled your way to the perfect shade – now it’s time to hire the painter. Whether it’s the entire exterior or your petite powder room, how do you know what to look for when receiving bids? Or even how to start the process?
You can get references from different sources (at Daly’s Paint we actually publish a Reference List of independent painters for you to use) ranging from the paint store, your neighbor or even a mailer. But, buyer beware! You still need to do your due diligence – and the following tips will help you sort through the process to find the right painter for your job.
Here are the basic qualifications EVERY painter should be able to provide:
- An up-to-date contractor’s license
- Proof of insurance
- References
That is only the beginning; you’ll also want to learn:
4. How long have they been in business?
5. How do they price their work? Some bid by the project, others charge time and materials.
6. What is the payment schedule?
7. Who is going to be working on your project?
8. How long will it take?
9. What quality of paint do they plan to use? Labor costs stay the same regardless, but the quality of the paint can make a big difference in the lifespan of the job.
10. Does the painter focus more on residential or commercial work? You do not want to hire a ‘blow-and-go’ painter or someone who does not understand the requirements of residential painting.
When you receive your bid:
11. It should include all the steps they are planning for prepping, priming, painting and clean-up. Everything should be clearly defined in the bid.
12. Compare apples to apples. When reviewing a number of bids make sure you understand the scope of work defined in each bid – don’t hesitate to ask questions!
Execute a contract:
13. You contract should include the scope of work, total anticipated cost, payment schedule, start date and estimated end date. It should also call out each paint color, sheen and brand – specifying location of each color and sheen, plus the number of coats. Don’t forget to specify clean-up responsibilities and guarantees on work. Finally, your contract should define what the steps are if there are any changes to the bid.
By following the steps listed above you will find yourself in a much better position to compare and evaluate the individual bids you receive and make an informed selection for the right painter.
Surprise Bonus Tip!
14. Make sure to collect at least three different bids for your job. Every painter runs their business differently, some may be busier than others, and some are more organized. They are all different, and by getting three bids you are ensuring you are the best educated consumer you can be.
Remember, your home is valuable, care for it well.

 Daly's Custom Stain Match
At Daly’s we are known for our stain matching skills. In Seattle, Paule is our color guru. She can make a beautiful color from just about anything.
Here the inspiration is from a Pratt & Lambert paint chip. The customer is going to be staining some outdoor Adirondack chairs. As you can see, these chairs are going to be statement pieces!
Nicely done, Paule!
If you need a custom stain color, Daly’s offers this custom service for $20, plus the cost of stain.
Here’s the Process:
We need a sample of what you are matching, plus a sample of wood that will be used in the project (Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, has created each species of wood to accept stain differently, so we need an actual piece of wood for color accuracy)
Oftentimes a coat of Daly’s Benite needs to be applied at least 24 hours before the scheduled match. Benite helps to let the stain absorb evenly in porous wood. Check with us to determine if this is needed. It can also be done here at the shop, but we must allow for the 24 hour drying period.
Turnaround ranges anywhere from a couple of days to a week. The match schedule is maintianed as a first come, first served service – so please allow yourself enough time when planning your project.
If you ever have any questions, give us a call! In Seattle (206) 633-4200 and Bellevue (425) 454-3093.

I recently heard from someone who’s dealing with hollow core doors in her home and no budget to replace them at this time. Her question is this: “Am I stuck forever with those ugly doors? Can I do anything on a budget to make them look better?”
WIth the right primer and paint from Daly's, you'll be on your way!
Yes, you can paint those doors!
Just because they are made from wood does not make them worthy of writing home about. It is perfectly okay to paint them and improve your look.
At Daly’s Paint & Decorating, these are the steps we suggest to people set on getting rid of that hollow (core) feeling and getting a new look for the cost of a few gallons of paint and some elbow grease.
Step 1) Remove doors from hinges. If you paint doors while still hanging in the frame, you might get unsightly drips. Tip: It’s best to create a sheltered work space where you can work to protect from moisture and dirt.
Step 2) Scuff sand the existing finish to give the surface some ‘tooth’ – try not to sand all the way down to bare wood, sand on the surface. Dust off sanding residue. Use a tack cloth for final dust removal.
Step 3) Prime with C2 One Primer, let dry. My favorite trick is to roll on the paint with a roller and then follow up with a brush to smooth out the wet paint and avoid leaving stippled roller marks. You can do this for both the primer and paint coats.
Step 4) Paint the primed doors in a Satin or Semi Gloss finish.
If you want the doors to visually disappear, try matching the door color to the wall color. This way the doors will blend into the overall scheme.
If you are painting both the wall trim and the doors, going a shade deeper than the walls is another great trick, too. Avoid whites and creams in these cases, because this tends to HIGHLIGHT the doors and trim and makes it more of an architectural feature. Save that for when you replace everything with gorgeous new doors and trim!
Before you know it, you’ll have a whole new a-door-able home.

At Daly’s Paint, color is something we never seem to get tired of talking about – and it’s in everything we put into our homes; furniture, lighting, textiles, paint… every element requires a color decision.
2011 Color Trend, C2 Paint 'Misty Morn'
It can be very educational, sometimes even inspirational, to see color used in new and interesting ways. Seattle Homes & Lifestyles just posted a great article interviewing some Seattle-area experts (including Daly’s Paint’s own Robin Daly) on what colors they find inspiring for 2011. There are great illustrations of each color used in a variety of ways, so you can see how to incorporate a little bit of the newest trends into your existing home.
Where do you find your inspiration?
