New Lead Paint Law: Article in Today’s Wall Street Journal

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

An article appeared in today’s Wall Street Journal outlining some of the main points of the new Lead Paint Law, along with some of the attending issues this law creates.

This law affects building built before 1978, and not only involves painters, but various types of contractors who might need to cut into a wall, sand a piece of trim or basically modify anything in the building that has a painted surface.

Locally, I’ve been speaking to painters and most are aware of the law and are enrolling in classes to learn about best practices, and get certified.

Dear Daly’s: Can I Paint a Linoleum Floor?

Monday, May 17th, 2010

On the Daly’s homepage there is a box that invites you to send in your design dilemmas called, “The Paint Princess is IN!” We love hearing from you about the problems you are looking to solve, and if you don’t have the time to give us a call right away, this is a great way to connect with us.

Here is a recent question:

“Do they make a paint you can use to paint over linoleum tiles?”

Daly’s Answer:

The quick answer to your question: Yes… and No.

The long answer:

Pratt & Lambert makes a great floor paint called WithStand Latex Floor Enamel. It’s available in all colors in the P&L palette, so you aren’t limited in color choice. It’s designed to be a bit flexible, so it will adhere to softer surfaces like linoleum tiles. Will it last as long as a new floor surface? No. But if you are looking for a solution to get you by until you can replace the existing floor, then this is a good option to consider.

You’ll want to make sure your floor is super clean and free of oily or waxy build-up to ensure best adhesion. Wash the floor with TSP or TSP Substitute, rinse well and dry. While the paint will dry in a few hours, it takes a few weeks for it to fully cure, so you’ll want to treat is gently at first.

What’s on your mind? Check in with us and maybe Daly’s can find the answer!

Daly’s Loves Discussions About Color!

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Here at Daly’s Paint & Decorating we happily spend hours discerning the differences between colors. But hey, that’s our job, and we specialize in color matching every day.

Below is a link to a very detailed color survey – its packed with (sometimes very frank) opinions that people have about color and color names. It looks at the age-old question regarding the differences between how men vs. women perceive color.  Plus it addresses the ALL IMPORTANT QUESTION: How do you spell Fuchsia? Or is it Fushia? Fuscia? Fucshia? Okay…. we’ll call it Hot Pink!

What is intriguing is how emotional people get about color. Color really is something that affects us, whether its our surroundings, the foods we eat or the clothes we wear. Color is everywhere!

Garage Floor Paint – From Classic Gray to Almost Unlimited Colors

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I just received an inquiry off our Daly’s Paint website (we have a box right on the homepage where you can send us your design and paint dilemmas) asking about garage floor paint.

What do you do to make the garage floor look great and resist wear and tear?

Ah-ha! Did you know there are some pitfalls to using regular floor paint in the garage? One of the main concerns has to do with hot tires ‘lifting’ off the paint from the floor. We don’t really give much thought to it, but car tires create a lot of friction when on the road and the tires get warm. When you drive over a painted surface day after day, that combination of friction and heat can lift off chunks of normally durable floor paint, leaving your garage floor looking blotchy. Not ideal.

So you need a product that is durable and very resistant to wear-and-tear.

Enter in Garage Guard. This is a 2-part epoxy coating, and we stock Showroom Gray. It’s $66.42 for the kit and covers about 250 sq. ft.

If color is your thing, and you want your garage to be something really special, check out Pratt & Lambert’s Palgard Epoxy. This is also a 2-part epoxy finish, but guess what? You can choose your favorite color from the Pratt & Lambert palette. It’s more expensive, ranging from $170.90 – 182.90 (depending upon the color.) – but worth it when it comes to adding a splash to an oft underappreciated room.

Let your imagination run a little wild – if you are going to the effort of painting the garage, why not have a little fun while you are at it? If you are a car afficianado, add a ‘racing stripe’ or splash of color to add some energy and visual interest to the space. Go Speed Racer, GO!

Wallpaper Design Trends

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

NWSID event at the Bellevue Daly's - it's all about WALLPAPER!!

NWSID event - there's always time for champagne and conversation!

Last week our Bellevue Daly’s Paint store hosted the monthly NWSID meeting, and it was all about WALLPAPER!!!  3rd generation paperhanger, Elgie Gibson, was the keynote speaker - plus Daly’s had the opportunity to get up and talk about the trends we are seeing in the industry right now.

Here’s a quick rundown of our favorite trends:

  • Grasscloth
  • Hand-Crafted Papers
  • Textures
  • Vinyls
  • Bold Graphics
  • Retro

While Grassclothhas never gone out of style, we are selling more of this handsome texture than almost any paper. Grasscloths are made from real grasses that are hand-knotted and glued to a paper substrate – no two strips are alike. Perfect for studies and dining rooms. If you are wanting that high-end look, but it is going into a bathroom, then Vinyl is the way to go. Vinyl has the reputation for being ugly and utilitarian – while still highly practical, today’s vinyls are also quite stylish. Some are so convincing, you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference from Grasscloth! Vinylsalso come is a broad range of colors and patterns. We feel the best ones are the vinyls that take advantage of their contemporary edge – highly textured and sculptural. Vinyl can really take advantage of it’s medium and exploit it’s maleable character to add dimension to a wall.

Hand-Crafted papers are another category that is getting a lot of attention – these papers are often hand-painted and texturized, turning your walls into works of art. Many times you can work with the manufacturer to choose custom colors.

Textures are a hot trend: Shimmery, pearlescent, even metallic copper threads being interwoven into grasscloth. The story is all about metallic shimmer instead of over-the-top glitz. Think of it as tasteful bling for hte walls!

Imagine taking a steadfast, traditional damask pattern and blowing it to over-scale and rendering it in modern colors… You are seeing the Bold Graphics trend in action. These patterns are a great way to wake-up a traditional space and add some pizazz without going overboard. Often used as a feature wall pattern or in small spaces, like powder rooms for high impact.

Whats old is new again, and we are seeing Retro designs, like art deco graphics and florals, being used in all kinds of fresh ways. To the modern eye, Retro patterns done on old presses have a real charm and hand-crafted quality that digital printing can’t achieve.
