Now that it's exterior maintenance season, the subject of deck care is a hot topic at Daly's.
We suggest our 1-2-3 system of deck care:
1) Daly's Deck & House Cleaner
This is a concentrate that you use to clean off the build up of debris, gunk, sludge and dirt that have accumulated on the deck.
Mix 1 part cleaner to 4 parts water, use a garden sprayer to apply the solution to the deck, agitate with a deck brush to loosen grime, and rinse well with water.
2) Daly's Wood Brightener
If your deck is aging, you may notice it looks gray and weathered, even after a good cleaning. Wood Brightener is a great step to take to restore the look of you wood to get it ready to accept stain.
You don't need to do this every time, but it's a great step to take if your deck is looking 'tired'.
3) Daly's DeckStain
A penetrating oil-based stain designed specifically for decks. The best part? We only want you to apply ONE coat! For most situations, expect to re-stain every 2-3 years. Available in clear and colors.
We typically recommend Daly's DeckStain for decks, but sometimes people are looking for a solid stain solution. C2 Paint makes a high quality water-based solid stain, available in any C2 Paint color.
Why do we try to encourage you to use a semi-transparent stain instead of a solid stain?
Solid stains do not penetrate like semi-transparent stains, instead they sit on the surface of the deck, more similar to a paint. Semi-transparent stains tend to wear off over time, without cracking, peeling or blistering.
Horizontal surface, like decks, are often the most exposed parts of your home and take a beating from sun and weathering. Solid stains look great when first applied, but tend to require more frequent maintenance and application than semi-trans stains.
Exotic Wood Decks
Ipe decks are stunningly gorgeous. With a rich red tone, tight grain and smooth finish, Ipe is a design spluge that adds that wow factor. One of the challenges for homeowners is how to care for Ipe. Traditional deck care products are not compatible with this naturally oily, dense wood because traditional deck stains cannot penetrate into Ipe; they simply puddle on the surface, which leads to future chipping, flaking and failures.
In the meantime, that rich beautiful deck is slowing graying out, needing some care and attention to maintain that special look.
Daly’s Ship’n Shore Sealer is a much better option than traditional deck stains; both for protecting your beautiful investment, and keeping it from greying out too quickly. Unlike stains, Ship’n Shore does not leave a surface film, so it won’t chip, crack, chalk, bister or peel.
The best part of it all is that Ship’n Shore brings out the natural beauty inherent in the wood, so it will keep that unique look for a very long time.
