"Life is one big canvas; throw all the paint on it you can."
— Danny Kaye

Bringing Good Design Principles into Your Own Home
Here is a simple exercise you can do to help you see your home from a new perspective. With a fresh point of view, you will easily be able to determine what projects you can do to make improvements and even incorporate some good design of your own.
The Home Tour Starts at Home!
Tools you'll need:
- Pad of paper
- Pen/pencil
- Measuring Tape
- Camera
- Go outside and walk all the way to the curb. Turn around and approach your house as if you are visiting it for the first time.

What does it look like to a stranger? Is the front door easy to find? Are the shrubs overgrown? Is it visually pleasing?
- What about the front door? Do you feel welcome to enter?

- Enter the house.

- Walk through each room of the house very purposefully, really looking at each room.
Take notes on each area: Do you need a table for mail and keys in the entry? Does that picture need to be hung that's been sitting on the floor for two years? Do the window treatments really work in the living room?
Look at everything. You can use this 'visit' to your home to create your punch-list of projects. Chances are a number of them are just mini to-do items that just need to happen, and you can knock them out in an afternoon. Then you can prioritize and budget for the larger scale projects.
Many things can happen when you view your home with a strangers' eyes. You might end up rearranging the furniture to create better flow in the living room, you might repaint a powder room or entry to give it more emphasis (paint is a great tool to adding flair without breaking the bank!), you could even add a couple flower pots at the front door to make it more welcoming. In all instances you have gained something very useful: perspective.
