Exterior Color Trends
Repainting the exterior of your home not only adds to its curb appeal, its an important part of maintaining your house. Since exterior color trends tend to fall along regional lines, taking cues from the surrounding environment is a good starting point for someone who is undecided on what colors to use. It's fun to take a tour of your favorite neighborhoods to get some color scheme ideas.

Dear Robin ~
Q) It's time for me to finally get the exterior of my house repainted. I've put if off long enough, but this is the summer we really need to repaint! I'm worried about finding the right color combination. What do I need to consider when choosing exterior paint colors?
A) First of all, don't panic. While choosing exterior colors is different than interior colors, I have some tips for you to keep in mind:
Tip #1: Remember that exterior colors tend to reflect out into the atmosphere, thereby lessening the color's intensity. This means that you'll probably want to choose a color that's a shade or even two deeper than you want it to look once painted.
This does not mean choose a color that's brighter (that would be a big no-no), just deeper and more saturated than you might expect.
Tip #2: Analyze your lighting conditions and exposure. If your house is nestled in a grove of woods, your colors will read very differently than if your house is perched on a cliff by the water.
Tip #3: Test your colors on all sides of the house. Not only that, but see how they look in all light conditions. At mid-morning things might be looking great, but by afternoon cocktails those colors may need adjusting.
C2 Paint makes the Ultimate Paint Chip, an 18" x 24" poster-sized sample of real paint of every color in their palette. Since they are so generously sized, you can really see how the color will look - and it's easy to move it around and try it on all sides of the house.
Pratt & Lambert has 2 oz. wet paint samples of select designer colors. This gives you enough paint to try the color, and its fun to try more than one (rather addictive, if you ask me!).
Tip #4: Don't forget to factor in the roof color.
Tip #5: Daly's make house calls! Color consultations are our specialty, and we'd be happy to work together with you to create the perfect color scheme for your home.
Tips & Tricks
House Prep
When preparing your home for painting you should wash the surface first. Dalys House Wash Concentrate is an excellent product for this step. If you notice a chalky film after washing the siding, use Daly's Benite to condition the surface. On areas that are down to raw wood or exposed, Benite will condition them and act as a wonderful base for your primer. Then, you can spot or full prime and coat with a good quality acrylic exterior paint.
Did you know that Daly's provides custom matching services? From stains to paint colors and everything in between Daly's has the know how to match whatever you need. Now we are able to do on the spot matches for paint with our new spectrophotometer.
Spectro-pho-what? A spectrophotometer is a tool that's able to digitally read your color sample and create your paint formula into both interior or exterior paint sheens. A technical marvel even to our choosy eyes.
