Robin Has Some Exciting News!

Robin and Christian Hello, I want to invite everyone to check out my new radio program that's all about interior design and how we live. It's called the design/files and you can hear me each Sunday on KKNW 1150am at 1pm.

I have partnered with Christian Ursino, a local interior designer, to launch this new show. We are so excited to bring you a fun hour filled with interesting topics, insider tips and listener emails

Both Christian and I feel that good design is something everyone can have, regardless of budget. We want to share our ideas with you and connect you to resources that you can actually use.

Some topics we will be covering in the near future are Spring Cleaning, Outdoor Living and Window Treatments. Please check out our show's website for more information, www.thedesignfiles.com.

A fun part of the show consists of answering listener emails. And we want to hear from you! If you have a question you'd like to address on the show, write to us at info@thedesignfiles.com. Who knows? Maybe your question will make it on the air!

Robin Daly Ask Robin

Robin Daly answers your decorating questions; if you have a decor problem just email her at robin@dalyspaint.com and she'll respond to you personally. Robin also makes house calls!

Dear Robin ~

Q) I live in a craftsman house with the original plaster walls that are cracked and irregular. Is there a way to either fix the cracks or cover them up that doesn't require drywall, mud and tape?

A) I love old houses; in fact I live in one myself. However, one reason we love them is for the old world charm they impart. Old world charm is a tactful way to say funky, cracked, aged, and sagging.

If you've personally survived 75 years of earthquakes, children, pets, remuddling projects and simply time passing, you might find you are a bit irregular and full of cracks, too. So our homes show their age sometimes.

There are some cosmetic steps you can take to minimize the signs of wear and tear. My favorite is to use a wallpaper you hang on the walls that's meant to be painted. There are no fussy prints or patters to deal with, you simply hang and paint it.

It's called Anaglypta embossed paper, and it's been around as long as some of our old homes (about 120 years). It's plain paper that's been deeply embossed with a simple texture, so when you hang it on the walls, it covers a myriad of sins. Best of all, it's about half the price of printed papers.

There are even some designs available that look like a pressed tin ceiling, so Anaglypta is a very flexible multi-purpose product.

If you'd rather just want to paint the walls, the best trick is to choose a mid-tone or deep color in a flat finish. This will visually minimize the cracks and blend them into the background of the room.

To tell you the truth, I like the cracks! It means my house has a story to tell (and this also keeps me from feeling like I need to make the walls perfectly smooth).

If you'd like to learn more about Anaglypta, we have a sample book of their papers in each store, just stop by the Design Resources department to check it out.
