Dear Robin ~

Q) I have an open floor plan, with one room leading into the next. Do I have to use the same window treatment on all my windows, or can I have a different look in each room?

A) With a situation like yours, I usually suggest that you unify the window treatments in your "public" spaces - for example, treat the living room and the dining room with an integrated look. This can be accomplished a couple of ways:
  1. Treat all the windows the same. This pulls your spaces together for a nice appearance.

  2. Layer your window treatments and keep the main element the same on all windows, but mix it up a bit with the top treatment to help define the space. For example, the living and dining rooms might both have grass blinds as the base treatment, but the living room may also have a pair of silk draperies added for drama.
Consider, also, how your house will look from the exterior. Too many different window treatments can make your house appear choppy and distracting. Unified treatments are another way to lend your home curb appeal (besides that fabulous exterior paint job!).
Tips & Tricks

Layering window treatments is a fabulous way to add interest and depth to a room. Tasteful shades with drapery side panels, woven wood shades with a padded cornice are only two ideas that might work for you. Look through decorator magazines for ideas that appeal to you. Or, let us help with unique window treatments that are designed especially for you. We have an amazing selection of fabrics to coordinate draperies, accessories, bedding, and upholstery.
